With a population of 90,000, Zenica is the fourth-largest city in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The local authority delivers district heating to a large part of the city, and over the years, records have indicated a steady rise in the wastage of both water and heat from the associated pipelines. The decision was therefore taken to renovate the 4 km-long pipe trench known as ‘the City Ring’. To complete this project, the local authority chose a system of preinsulated pipes from LOGSTOR, including a surveillance system in the form of LOGSTOR Detect. A team of local designers came to Denmark for a special course in this regard, and they then prepared a design in which load-reducing U-bends were used in combination with curved pipes.
The casing joints used were SX joints for outer casings with diameters of up to 450 mm, and BX joints for outer casing diameters measuring 500 mm or more. These types were selected because they are extremely flexible and easy to install, given that no specialist tools are required. LOGSTOR technicians were present on site to train the local fitters in how to install the joints. All pipes were supplied with copper wire embedded in the insulation.
Following installation of the pipe sections, the wires are connected up and the entire system can then be monitored from a central location using an X4 alarm unit for the LOGSTOR Detect system. If any water penetrates the insulation on account of a leak in the pipes, the affected area is immediately identified and the problem can therefore be dealt with before the system suffers serious damage.
- 8,076 m of preinsulated pipes in sizes DN 50 to DN 500, of which the majority were DN 500
- 432 m of preinsulated curved pipes
- SX and BX joints
- Course for designers in Denmark
- Training for fitters at the installation sites
- Installation in 2012/13, brought online in 2013.
