While the climate in Helsinki demands heat production all year round, the need for cooling has also risen appreciably during the past 10–20 years. The reason for this is the widespread use of electronic equipment, lighting, the flow of people, and the increase in solar heating, which is attributable to the rising use of glass in modern buildings.
All these factors contribute to raising indoor temperatures.
Maintaining a good interior climate and appropriate temperatures has a major effect on work efficiency and levels of comfort in shops and offices, as well as in hotels, shopping malls and private homes. Heating and cooling requirements are met through CHP production.
In winter, the excess heat from electricity generation is used for district heating. In summer, however, demand for district heating is much lower, but absorption technology actually makes it possible to use surplus heat for cooling. In addition, cold sea water can be used for district cooling systems.
This source of energy is free, sustainable and generates no carbon emissions.
